Call to end violence against women and girls – Action Plan launched
On the 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day (Tuesday 8th March 2011), the government launched its ‘Call to End Violence Against Women and Girls - Action Plan' setting out how the coalition plans to tackle domestic and sexual violence.
- Key actions from the plan include:
- • Making data more accessible in order to ensure that resources are targeted where they are most needed;
- • Further research into the reporting of rape and myths surrounding false allegations;
- • A new national group to work on the issue of stalking and improving police response;
- • Awareness campaigns to raise awareness of the law relating to sexual offences, with a particular focus on teenage relationships;
- • More training for healthcare professionals; and
- • Stable funding for services such as Rape Crisis, ISVAs and the National Helpline.
Home Secretary Theresa May said: “International Women's Day is an excellent opportunity to highlight the many ways women are making a positive impact in this country and around the world. However more needs to be done to ensure that we provide the best possible start for future generations.”
The Home Office has also announced £28 million of funding for tackling violence against women and girls until 2015.
