24 Hour Domestic Violence Help-line
The World Cup and Domestic Violence
Around the time of major sporting events Nottinghamshire emergency services and Women's Aid see a rise in calls and referrals...
It is expected that this will be the case over the period of the World Cup. In 2000 during the European Cup there was a significant increase in the number of calls to the Women's Aid 24 Hour helpline and Police received an increase in the amount of calls. One woman detailed her experience at the time:
"My partner used to beat me regularly, but it was always worse when England lost. He would blame the alcohol and the football. But I know now it wasn't these things that were to blame. It was him."
NDVF (specifically the TRI Project) have developed a poster to go in pubs that emphasises the fact that the violence is not caused by alcohol consumed during matches. Men who are violent after matches may have been drinking but the majority of them will already be behaving abusively when not drunk as well.
Campaigns have been launched across the Country to try and raise awareness of this factor. See link adjacent for Nottinghamshire Police response.
