24 Hour Domestic Violence Help-line
Report on teenage Pregnancy cites domestic violence as a common link
A report on teenage pregnancy and social exclusion has identified domestic violence as being a factor in the lives of teenagers that are pregnant.
'The report is a multi-method study of teenage parenthood carried out over two years from March 2002 by a team of researchers at the Social Science Research Unit, the Institute of Education, University of London, and the Medical Statistics Unit, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. The study is part of a programme of research commissioned by the English Department of Health (DH) in order to inform the government’s Teenage Pregnancy Strategy.'
The report establishes that for those young parents interviewed violence in the home was a common theme. 69% of the male parents had experienced either an absent father or violence in the family, whilst over one third of the young women had experienced domestic violence at home.
The report states that profesionals working with teenage parents should be given information on domestic violence.
