Multi-Agency Training Programme
NDVF provides training free of charge to professionals across Nottinghamshire funded by Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County Council. The training is delivered mainly by Women's Aid Trainer's or by NDVF workers. The courses currently available for professionals on the multi-agency training programme are:
Domestic Violence Awareness (Modules 1 and 2):
Domestic Violence Awareness is the starting point for all professionals and volunteers who want to learn more about what domestic violence is and how to support women who experience it. The day’s training covers the following:
- Aspect of domestic violence;
- Myths and stereotypes;
- Reasons women stay or return to violent relationships;
- Impact of domestic violence Links between domestic violence and child abuse;
- Good practice guidelines for supporting women and children experiencing domestic violence.
(It should be highlighted that this course is principally about women experiencing domestic violence from male perpetrators. Men experiencing domestic violence from female perpetrators is a different course)
Challenging Domestic Violence (Modules 3 and 4):
Following on from the Domestic Violence Awareness training, this course is for those who may work with men who perpetrate abuse, it aims to:
- Promote a greater understanding about why men perpetrate domestic violence;
- Address the links between belief and behaviour;
- Look at the use of children to control the victim;
- Address the risks of confidentiality and collusion;
- Identify appropriate ways to respond to men using domestic violence.
N.B. delegates must have previously completed DV Awareness.
Supporting survivors of sexual violence: the Sexual Offences Act 2003 and the criminal justice system
This half-day course, developed and delivered by Rights of Women, provides a practical overview of the law on sexual violence and the criminal justice system including:
- The new offences of rape, sexual assault, causing someone to engage in sexual activity and assault by penetration in the Sexual Offences Act 2003;
- The definition of consent and the presumptions;
- The investigation, the decision to charge and trial;
- Complaints and compensation.
Participants will receive full training materials and a copy of ‘From Report to Court: a handbook for adult survivors of sexual violence.’
N.B. Delegates must have attended Domestic Violence Awareness Training prior to booking onto this course.
Asylum and immigration law: protecting women from violence and securing their position in the UK
This full-day course, developed and delivered by Rights of Women, will be a practical overview of:
- The legal framework of immigration control in the UK;
- An introduction to refugee law (including the Refugee Convention 1951 and the ECHR 1950);
- EEA nationals, benefits their family members and relationship breakdown;
- Entering the UK as a spouse, civil partner or partner of someone present and settled in the UK;
- Relationship breakdown and domestic violence; and
- No recourse to public funds.
Participants will receive full training materials and a copy of ‘Seeking Refuge? A handbook for asylum seeking women and Pathways to Justice: BMER women, violence and the law.’

Female Genital Mutilation Seminar:
This half-day course, developed and delivered by Naana Ooto-Oyortey, Executive Director of FORWARD, will:
- Introduce Female Genital Mutilation (FGM);
- Define what FGM is and who experiences it;
- Identify indicators;
- Explore support and signposting options; and
- Place FGM into a context of gender related violence.
