Domestic violence is one of the single largest causes of homelessness

 Domestic violence is one of the single largest causes of homelessness.  The statistics below indicate why Housing Departments and Housing Associations need to have comprehensive policies on domestic violence.

  • Nottingham CAT team Rough Sleepers survey Nov 03 – ‘59% of women Rough sleepers had experienced domestic violence, 41% were care leavers and 70% family / relationship breakdown
  • Nottingham City Council Domestic Violence Audit 200/1 – 2003/2004 – ‘The Progress of Homelessness Applications made to Nottingham City Council during 2001/2002” domestic violence resulted in the homelessness of families in 32.93% of cases and in the homelessness of single people in 6.5% of cases’
  • 38% of families using Shelter's Homeless to Home projects had lost their home through domestic violence, based on both local authority figures and the family's interpretation of their situation2Jones A, Pleace N, Quilgars D.
