Health and domestic violence

Health and domestic violence are inextricably linked.  Health services may be a first point of contact for a woman experiencing domestic violence, by G.P, Accident and Emergency, health visitor, midwife or other health professional.  It is essential as such that workers within the health service are aware of good practice on domestic violence.

The effects of domestic violence also invariably affect mental health.  Dr Sheila Adam – Health Services Director NHS Executive 2000 stated that ‘ Women who are abused and living in a violent situation are particularly at risk from psychological problems and over and above all of that they have difficulty accessing preventative health services and other approaches to healthy living’.

The downloads section of this website has a wide variety of documents available including pregnancy and domestic violence, guidelines for health professionals working with domestic violence and the Nottingham PCT guidelines on domestic violence.
