Drugs and alcohol and domestic violence

Professionals working with a survivor or perpetrator using drugs or alcohol need to be aware of the extra complexities this adds to a relationship where domestic violence is present.  The Nottinghamshire County Council have developed a set of guidelines that can be accessed through the downloads section. Nottinghamshire County Council and Nottinghamshire Drug and Alcohol Action Team work firmly from the perspective that there is not a causal link between substance misuse and violence; drug or alcohol use should never be accepted as an excuse for violent or abusive behaviour and neither should women’s substance use be used to justify their experiences of violence.  The existence of substance use within a violent relationship either by the perpetrator or the survivor.
